Nokia Buys a Fab to Secure InP Optical Chips – Supply Play for AI Data Centers

Nokia has signed a deal to acquire NXP’s 6-inch compound semiconductor fab in Chandler, Arizona (ECHO plant), with full closure expected by Q1 2029. Originally built for 5G GaN RF amplifiers, Nokia will retool the line for indium phosphide (InP) optical semiconductors – a critical material for electrical-to-optical signal conversion in high-speed networks.

Why this matters: AI data centers are shifting from copper to fiber, driving InP demand to over 2× current production capacity. Only Coherent and Lumentum have meaningful volume today. Supply tightness is projected to exceed DRAM and NAND constraints. NVIDIA alone has committed $2B each to both suppliers this year. Lumentum notes traditional customers order hundreds of lasers; AI players order hundreds of millions.

Nokia is pivoting from telecom equipment to AI infrastructure. After buying Infinera (2025) for an InP fab in California, this second fab plus a 10× expansion of its Pennsylvania packaging plant gives Nokia end-to-end InP chip manufacturing and packaging. Q2 2026 net sales hit €4.815B (+9% YoY), with optical revenue up 20% and AI/cloud customer revenue +105%. Stock is up 52.4% this year. North American optical market share is projected to rise from 6.3% to 27.3%.

Risks remain: high capital expenditure, a long ramp (full capacity only post-2029), and macro sensitivity – any slowdown in data center buildout hits optical orders. Nokia trades at AI-valuation multiples but current earnings lag AI peers.
